Borrell has summoned the Foreign Ministers today at the request of Spain
The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, has urgently summoned the Foreign Ministers this Tuesday afternoon to study the sanctions against Russia for the recognition of the Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk.
The extraordinary meeting will take place in Paris, where European ministers are taking part in a cooperation forum with the Indo-Pacific region. “I have called an emergency council that France is going to organize here in Paris, it will be informal but it will give the political decisions on the European response on the form of sanctions,” he confirmed in statements to the press from the French capital.
The meeting will be at 4:00 p.m. and has been arranged at the proposal of Spain, after the Spanish minister, José Manuel Albares, spoke with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian and with the High Representative, European sources have reported.
Take the iniciative
Borrell has indicated that the ministers will study the proposal that he puts on the table, as he promised on Monday when he said that he would take the initiative if Moscow took the step of recognizing the independence of the separatist regions. This meeting is added to the extraordinary meeting at the level of ambassadors that starts at 9:30 a.m. to define the next community steps before the pulse raised by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
Regarding the Kremlin’s decision to send Russian troops to these two provinces, the head of community diplomacy has warned that it would mean Russia’s intervention in Ukraine. “We consider Donbas part of Ukraine, so certainly if they enter I would not say that it is a large-scale invasion, but Russian troops will be on Ukrainian territory,” Borrell warned, without wanting to advance more details about the European response.
