The seventh package of anti-Russian sanctions from the European Union (EU) came into force on Thursday, July 21. The relevant document was published in Official Journal of the EU.
The new restrictions apply “to direct and indirect imports, purchases or transfers of gold, which is the most significant Russian export after energy resources.” It is noted that gold mined in Russia falls under the ban.
In addition, the EU has expanded the “black list” of individuals and structures. In particular, sanctions were imposed against Russian actors Sergei Bezrukov and Vladimir Mashkov, as well as the Night Wolves motorcycle club and its president Alexander Zaldastanov.
In turn, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the new package of restrictions would have serious consequences for the global economy and security.
She added that restrictive measures against Moscow are illegitimate, and attempts to put pressure on the Russian side in this way have no prospects.
As Dmitry Belik, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia on Thursday, commenting on the seventh package of anti-Russian restrictions, a partial embargo on gold imports and a ban on the import of certain goods will not be a panacea for the energy crisis and will not solve a bunch of problems that Europe is currently facing. . According to him, Russia will find an opportunity to cope with new sanctions challenges.
On July 21, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out that the European Union maniacally continues to adopt new anti-Russian sanctions, despite their harm to the population of Europe.
Meanwhile, the European Union has decided to de-limit financial transactions to pay for Russian oil supplies to third countries and Russian food exports. In addition, the EU withdrew from sanctions the supply of a number of goods and services to Russia for the aviation industry.
Western countries began imposing new sanctions against Russia after the start of a special military operation to protect Donbass on February 24. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated significantly due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR.
