The Ertzaintza has located weapons and various ammunition inside a zulo abandoned in a mountain area near the town of Ataun (Gipuzkoa). The first investigations suggest that the hideout could belong to ETA. Agents from the Central Intelligence Office of the Basque Police are currently working in the area after receiving a call from a private individual.
The zulo is located in a wooded area called Aitzarte Aldea, as reported by the Security Department of the Basque Government. In its interior weapons and ammunition have been found, without specifying the arsenal it contained, which makes the Ertzaintza think that it may be a hiding place that some ETA command left abandoned. Members of the Citizen Protection, Surveillance, Rescue, Explosives, Scientific Police and rural patrols from the Ertzaintza de Oria police station have appeared at the place of the zulo.
In April 2017, a year before ETA publicly announced its final dissolution, the armed organization staged its disarmament. He placed in the hands of the French police 118 pistols, rifles and automatic weapons, 2,875 kilos of explosives and 25,700 detonation elements and ammunition that were hidden in eight warehouses, the location of which was provided by members of the International Verification Commission to the French authorities. The terrorist gang, which announced the “definitive cessation” of violence in October 2011, assured then that it was “totally disarmed,” according to the civilian mediators who received the location of the deposits from the terrorists. Most of the zulos were in small municipalities in the French Basque Country.
Years earlier, in February 2014, he made a disarmament threat by handing over just four disabled firearms and nearly two dozen kilos of material to manufacture explosives through a video. A cache with several kilos of explosive material, detonators and cartridges was found in August 2019 by chance by passers-by in the French department of Yonne, in the center of the country. A year later, in October 2020, three former ETA members were arrested in several simultaneous police operations as responsible for a former gang explosives cache that was discovered by chance in June of last year in the Alava municipality of Arraia- Maeztu. A passerby found the mouth of two drums that contained various types of explosives, detonators, detonating cord and timers.
