Nusantara does not even exist and is already a rival to Santiago de Chile to organize the 2036 Olympic Games. The Indonesian government wanted to get ahead of itself by nominating its future capital – which just began construction this year – in order to plan urban sports venues in a city. which will only be ready in 2045, when it will be one hundred years since Jakarta has been the political center of the country.
It is estimated that the city will have a final cost of 50 billion dollars and its construction will serve to bring government decisions closer to the center of the country, reducing the importance of Java with respect to the rest of the archipelago, the largest in the world. The fourth most populous country on the planet registers significant social inequalities, and bringing the capital to the island of Borneo means not only jobs and development, but also an opportunity to open up to the world. That, of course, without considering that Jakarta is “sinking” rapidly. The big problem with Nusantara is that there are serious financing problems for the project.
“India will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games in our country,” Prime Minister Narandra Modi told the General Assembly of the Olympic Committee meeting in Mumbai. The surprise is that the Games will be awarded to cities, and not to countries, and that this time the country’s commitment is to Ahmedabad, Modi’s hometown, where there is already the largest stadium on the planet, with capacity for 200 thousand people. and which is named after the…prime minister.
Known as “the Manchester of India” for its industrial growth and strong textile economy, the city is also known as Karnavati. The internal debate will determine whether the internal race against currently more developed cities wins, but the idea is also to promote internal growth to reduce inequalities in investment.
Strictly speaking, the 2036 Games should correspond to Asia by tradition. Paris, Los Angeles and Brisbane will take the competition to Europe, America and Oceania. It should be Africa’s turn, but there are no applications from that continent. That is why the Doha option is the favorite so far. The sheikhs of Qatar have mobilized all their influence to promise the greatest Games in history, and they are ahead in the predictions. Its advantages are facilities that are mostly already built or planned. Its disadvantage: the extreme heat, the same as the World Cup won by Messi’s Argentina.
Far above Madrid and Istanbul, which have already presented candidacies that were defeated, but intend to insist with new plans. Although in the European race Warsaw is strong and so is Berlin, with a special plan: to celebrate the centenary of the 1936 Games, those where Hitler was on the platform witnessing the consecration of Jesse Owens.
Mexico City also wants to enter the dispute, although its proximity to the Los Angeles Games in 2028 makes it very remote. Chile will then have to quickly prepare its plans if it wants to enter the race, because the investment, it is estimated, will be ten times greater than that made for the Pan American Games, since a good part of the infrastructure built for last year could not be used in the planetary appointment.
While waiting for the final balance of the 2023 Games and in the midst of constant parliamentary and Comptroller requests for the final cost of the contest and the salaries of the officials who still continue to work, Santiago’s chances for 2036 are, as President Gabriel Boric himself defined it as “an invitation to dream high.”
