The conversion of the automotive sector to electric will have an impact on employment in Italy. The latest estimates speak of approx 60,000 jobs at risk due to the green transition, with some companies even in danger of closing forever. And the reference is clearly not to Ferrari, Lamborghini and all those giants who will be saved in one way or another, but to the more than 2,200 companies of the components which supply all the best-known car brands, and where 161,000 people work. Just think that about 30% of German cars are made with parts produced in Italy to understand how important this sector is at European level.
“If Parliament ratifies the Commission’s proposal, car manufacturers in Europe will have to say goodbye to the internal combustion engine (petrol, diesel) by 2035. And 67% of our exports are directed precisely to the countries of the Union – we read in Il Corriere della Sera on newsstands this morning – Beyond the pushes and pulls on the times, the electric motor is imposing itself, and to produce it you need 30% less manpower. It means that if in Italy we stand still and watch, within the next 14 years 60,000 people in 500 companies will lose their jobs ”. The future is therefore worrying, even if for some companies even the present is proving to be complicated to deal with, given that, for example, the factories that produce diesel they have had to contend with a market share that has more than halved in the past thirteen years.
Finally, it is still unclear today whether the current pace at which the electric transition is being supported is right. There are those who ask to accelerate if you want to keep up with the times, but there are also those, like the Confindustria of Italy, Germany and France, they press for longer times. There are three things that our country can and must do if it wants to save the auto sector: attract investments from new electric car manufacturers, build Gigafactories to produce, regenerate, repair and recycle batteries, without totally depending on the Chinese, and prepare tools to manage the transition from one job to another, shared with the trade unions. “The transition process will be accelerated when the price gap between electric cars and those with internal combustion engines will reduce, due to economies of scale – concludes the newspaper – It is estimated that within the next three years, having and operating an electric car will therefore be less expensive ”.
