The National Electoral Chamber rejection this week the request of the federal judge with electoral jurisdiction in La Plata, Alejo Ramos Padilla, for observers to be summoned in the next elections in view of the opposition’s doubts about their impartiality.
However, he did not rule out the possibility of inviting “foreign visitors”, a category that is contemplated in Argentine legislation and that is customary.
“Our country does not count with legal norms that regulate this type of activity, nor does there exist, therefore, the technical status of electoral observer, “explained the vice president of the Chamber, Daniel Bejas, through a statement.
Ramos Padilla made the request after former President Mauricio Macri questioned the new electoral judge of La Plata for his membership in Legitimate Justice and his father’s militancy in favor of Vice President Cristina Kirchner. No opposition senator voted the statement of Ramos Padilla for his controversial action in the case of Operative Puf against the cause of the Cuadernos de las Bribes.
“The doubts in the collective imagination about the regularity of an electoral process affect not only public confidence about the mechanism for appointing authorities, rather, they empty the mandate of those who assume the public function in such conditions“said the La Plata magistrate in the note he sent to the president of the National Electoral Chamber, Santiago Corcuera.
In this context, Ramos Padilla requested that the international observers be summoned that will allow “to rule out any possibility of suspicion about the transparency with which it will be carried out. the electoral process in the province of Buenos Aires, avoid all kinds of suspicion, ensure the tranquility of all participants, strengthen the confidence of citizens in the development and transparency of the current process and the legitimacy of the elected authorities. “
In the statement released by Télam, Bejas remarked that the federal judges with electoral competence are those who have the “powers of organization and control of national elections” since the enactment of the Saénz Peña law.
However, Bejas clarified that there is a category of “foreign visitors” that could be applied to Ramos Padilla’s request.
“The court will evaluate the modality of carrying out this practice, habitual and continuous, in the particular health context motivated by the pandemic,” said the Electoral Chamber that has yet to decide the rejection of the mayor of Esteban Echeverría, Fernando Gray, to the election of Máximo Kirchner as president of the Buenos Aires PJ.
