Yesterday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a republican decree pardoning the remaining penalties imposed on 1,270 prison inmates.
A statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior said, “In implementation of Presidential Decision No. 297 of 2022, regarding the release of an amnesty for the remainder of the sentence for some of the convicts who fulfilled the conditions of the amnesty, on the occasion of the celebration of Eid al-Adha, the community protection sector held committees to examine the files of Inmates of reform and rehabilitation centers nationwide to determine those eligible for release.
The statement added, “The committee’s work ended with the release of 1,270 inmates who deserved to be released with a pardon.”
He went on to explain that “this comes within the framework of the Ministry of Interior’s keenness to implement the punitive policy in its modern sense, provide various aspects of care for inmates, and activate the executive role of the methods of releasing the convicts, who have been rehabilitated to integrate into society.”
