The protest against the “tax on billionaires” could have prompted the entrepreneur Elon Musk to arrange a survey on Twitter, whether to sell him a 10% stake in Tesla. This explanation of the actions of the American billionaire on Monday, November 8, was proposed by the vice-rector of the RANEPA under the President of the Russian Federation, director of the Institute of Finance and Sustainable Development Andrei Margolin in an interview with Izvestia.
“Elon Musk has always opposed the tax on billionaires, and said that he had no cash. And in order to pay taxes, he must sell shares. In essence, this is a long-standing dispute over whether or not to tax the gains from stock gains, even if they are not traded on the market. He is trying to draw attention to such a problem in an original way, ”the expert said.
Margolin noted a high percentage of those who voted against the sale of shares – more than 40% – which, according to the expert, in the future may allow Musk to talk about the lack of elaboration of the proposal on the “tax on billionaires”, arguing his words with low support for the initiative. The expert also doubts that the businessman will decide on Tesla shares based on a vote on the social network.
“This is an original sociological survey. In any case, he remains a winner, if he needs to pay taxes, he will sell some part of the shares, and he will receive arguments in favor of his point of view, ”the economist concluded.
On November 6, Elon Musk posted a poll on his Twitter page and invited subscribers to determine the fate of 10% of his Tesla shares. Sell them or leave them, promising that they will act according to the results of the vote. Prior to that, the entrepreneur expressed a desire to save humanity from hunger by selling shares in an electric car brand.
