new seismic swarm at Campi Flegrei: the number of tremors felt by the population between night and dawn rises to 17
At 12.09 today 18 April the earth trembled in the Campli Flegrei with a shock of earthquake of magnitude not yet communicated. The number of tremors felt by the population between the night and this morning rises to 17.
The shock was clearly felt by the inhabitants of Agnano, in the province of Naples and by residents of the neighboring neighborhood Pozzuoli. The INGV, national institute of volcanology and earthquake observation, announced that the seismic shock was recorded by the instrumentation positioned in the stations of the Vesuvian Observatory in the Campi Flegrei. Dense but mild seismic activity has been going on since night.
The seismic swarm has been affecting the area for several days. Last Sunday the 3.7 magnitude earthquake was felt by the population. The earth shook in several neighborhoods of the Neapolitan area such as Vomero, Chiaia and Fuorigrotta, Pianura, Soccavo. There was no damage to structures or people. The competent authorities, however, recommend caution and assure that the situation is under control and that INGV constantly monitors the geological situation throughout the Italian territory.
The mayor of Pozzuoli Luigi Manzoni he declared that the seismic activity of these hours has caused some concern, but the administration is at the service of the citizens and is committed to disseminating concrete information, putting exercises into practice and maintaining an open dialogue with the institutions.
“The planned activities that led to the adoption of the Campi Flegrei law decree are progressing in a synergistic way between the government, civil protection and local authorities, there will also soon be exercises for risk mitigation”.
Italy is located in a significant seismic region due to its location along the margin of the African tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate. This position makes the country subject to frequent earthquakes of varying intensity. The areas most subject to earthquakes are mainly those along the Apennine chain, where geological faults cause tectonic movements that can generate seismic shocks. Some of the regions most at risk include Sicily, Calabria, Abruzzo and Emilia Romagna.
The level of attention from all the competent bodies remains high.
