Three Dutch tourists on Saturday at Lake Garda with their rented trike, a motorized tricycle, plunged tens of meters from a cliff. Two of them were seriously injured.
The drama unfolded on Saturday morning just after eleven near Brenzone sul Garda, a town on the east side of Lake Garda, northwest of Verona. A group of seven Dutch holidaymakers had rented two trikes and two Vespas for a day trip.
Part of the ride was a descent from the Via del Sole to the Punta Veleno viewpoint. A particularly steep road that connects the village of Prada, located at an altitude of almost 1200 meters, with Lake Garda.
Somewhere at the eleventh hairpin, things go horribly wrong: the driver of one of the two trikes loses control of the wheel and flips over into the abyss. After a fall of at least ten meters, the motorized tricycle slides down between the woods, gravel and vegetation. The ride eventually ends no less than 50 meters below the road in the brambles.
The Italian emergency services immediately turned out en masse. Ambulances, fire brigade, mountain rescuers and the Brenzone police were quickly on the scene. Two of the three passengers were found to be seriously injured and were rushed to Borgo Trento hospital in Verona by helicopter. Miraculously, the third passenger only suffered minor injuries.

One of the scooters would also have gone off the road, local media write Verona Oggi and L’Arenac† The two Dutch tourists thereon were slightly injured. The other three Dutch people appear to be virtually unharmed. However, it is unclear whether the other four Dutch people have also (partially) crashed.
It is still unclear how the accident could have taken place, as the police are currently investigating. However, it is suspected that the driver of the trike misjudged the hairpin bend.
An important detail is that the seven Dutchmen were probably not allowed to drive on the road in question, which is considered very steep. “The descent of Punta Veleno is prohibited for cars with automatic transmission and motorcycles without gears, as in the case of the affected vehicles,” writes the Veronose newspaper. L’Arenac† The question is, of course, whether the tourists knew that.
