The author of the shots, who has been arrested, is a childhood friend of the deceased
The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has decreed three days of mourning for the murder of Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera, who was shot in his own office by a childhood friend who later turned himself in to the authorities.
The suspect arrived at the office visibly nervous and it was the minister himself who calmed the initial suspicions of his staff: “Don’t worry, Miguel is my friend,” he said then, according to the newspaper ‘Listín Diario’.
After the shooting, the 56-year-old alleged perpetrator ran from the building and reached a church located just under three kilometers away. With the gun still in his possession, he appeared before the priest and confessed that he had committed murder, without identifying the victim.
The Prosecutor’s Office finally negotiated with Cruz, who “said that he would surrender if the Public Ministry guaranteed his life,” according to a statement from the institution.
