Coronavirus does not directly affect the brain and nervous system of the child in the womb, unlike the psychological state of the mother. About this on Saturday, February 12, told TASS infectious disease doctor Evgeny Timakov.
“The virus only affects pregnancy and its course. The virus does not directly cause organic damage to the nervous system in the fetus. Coronavirus infection has not been proven to directly affect the central nervous system of the fetus, ”the expert noted.
Timakov noted that a child can only be directly affected by intrauterine infection, which is quite rare. This is also evidenced by foreign studies. In most cases, COVID-19 can affect the nutrition of the fetus, contribute to inflammation of the placenta, which leads to a delay in fetal development.
According to research results, a developmental delay in children born during a pandemic is observed both in pregnant women who have been ill and in those who have been bypassed by the virus. Timakov stressed that pregnant women could experience increased levels of stress, which affected the development of children.
“A comparison of groups of mothers who had coronavirus infection and did not show any difference. That is, among mothers who were both sick and not sick with covid, some of the children were born with a delay in these skills. The conclusion was made that the pandemic itself is affecting: restrictive measures, lack of oxygen, lack of movement, constant stress, malnutrition. This just affects the development of the child, but not the coronavirus itself, ”said the doctor.
Earlier, on February 11, Deputy Director for Research at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Gorelov said that children born to mothers who had coronavirus during pregnancy may develop more slowly. This is observed in 20% of cases. Gorelov added that the consequences of the mother’s coronavirus during pregnancy can be reduced if developmental delays in the child are detected at an early stage and undergo rehabilitation.
At the end of last year, the Russian Ministry of Health released a new version of guidelines for providing medical care to pregnant women, women in labor and newborns with coronavirus. The new version of the recommendations includes several additions. The chapter “Pathogenetic treatment of pregnant women, women in childbirth and puerperas with COVID-19” has also been updated regarding the use of drugs.
A large-scale vaccination campaign continues in Russia. Citizens can get vaccinated for free. Six coronavirus drugs have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, KoviVac, EpiVacCorona-N, and the Sputnik M vaccine for adolescents.
