The Union Coalition of Educators of the state of Táchira, in Venezuela, released this Wednesday (18) a figure that illustrates the disaster in education in the country under Chavismo.
According to William Fernández, coordinator of the union body, 80% of teachers left the state education network in the 2023-2024 school year.
In an interview with Diário de Los Andes, the coordinator said that many teachers leave to look for work in Colombia. Those who stay in Venezuela are often forced to resort to other occupations, such as motorcycle taxi drivers or street vendors.
“Today, a Grade 4 teacher earns approximately US$22 per month, which forces many to leave teaching jobs in search of alternatives that allow them to feed their families,” said Fernández.
“We see many of our teachers visiting schools with a catalogue of products to sell, holding raffles or performing functions that have nothing to do with the pedagogical work for which they have been trained,” said the coordinator.
