In light of the continuing controversy over the rise in food prices, the economic strategy is in the context of supporting local agriculture, especially in desert areas, while encouraging young people to establish mini-projects to provide basic foodstuffs that citizens need on a daily basis.
The latest report of the World Food Security Program issued by the United Nations ranked Algeria in first place in Africa in terms of food security, with an estimate of 63.9 percent, making it among the countries able to support the efforts of the aspiring United Nations Program to achieve “zero hunger” by 2030. .
The Algerian economy figures indicate that the contribution of agriculture to the gross domestic product does not exceed 13 percent, or about $25 billion. The government has pledged to double these numbers by supporting smart agriculture, to expand irrigated areas and improve the rational use of agricultural lands, by digitizing the sector’s programmes.
The head of the “Falaha Inov” organization, Amin bin Samman, believes that the future plan aims to develop the agricultural sector in rural areas, in order to implement the policy of rural agricultural renewal.
Bensmane told Sky News Arabia that Algeria views agroecology as an essential support for organic agriculture and local products.
Smart agriculture takes into account the rapid development of technology, through the dissemination of renewable energies in irrigation and the use of solar energy in pumping instead of oil engines, in order to provide between 15 to 40 percent of energy use.
To achieve food security, the experts stressed the need to expedite support for the cultivation of fruit and vegetable products, and to highlight the role of micro-entrepreneurs. For this reason, the government provided great facilities for young people wishing to invest in agriculture, after solving one of the most difficult obstacles facing the issue of developing agriculture in the regions. remote areas, which is related to the census of agricultural lands, and the preparation of a new law for its redistribution to small farmer investors.
In contrast, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has developed a new action plan aimed at opening two national schools for agriculture, to contribute to linking agricultural projects with modern scientific research.
hard mission
Civil society senses the government’s desire to shed more light on agricultural innovation, with the aim of introducing new technologies, by urging researchers to link most agricultural land to new digital technologies by 2024.
In this regard, the head of the Consumer Protection Association, Mustafa Zabadi, described the efforts as “positive, facing a very difficult task.”
“These major projects are still facing the problem of bureaucracy,” Zabdi told Sky News Arabia.
The president of the association stressed that “the political will is there, but the reality is difficult due to the penetration of bureaucratic administration in all areas.”
The head of the association indicated that the state’s contribution to achieving food security in many products, such as poultry and basic foodstuffs, does not exceed 10 percent, in return for the continuation of the import policy.
He added, “There are several difficulties in achieving self-sufficiency, especially since many local products do not live up to the aspirations of the Algerian consumer in terms of quality.”
