Driving on the road /
Article 31 of the
General Circulation Regulation It is clear: «you will normally circulate in the lane located furthest to your right, although you may use the rest of the lanes in that direction when the circumstances of the traffic or the road make it advisable, provided that it does not hinder the progress of another vehicle following you.
Therefore, the rest of the lanes on your left are for overtaking, taking an exit on that side or, in the case of high traffic density, if there is no other way to circulate than spreading out across the width of the road.
However, many do not understand it that way when they have “everything to themselves” on the motorway or dual carriageway. And so not a few
drivers have a bad habit to circulate in the central lane, even without impediments to do so in the right lane.
It is mandatory to drive in the right lane whenever it is free if you do not want to overtake.
rigorously, who circulates in the left and central lanes can be sanctioned when the right is free, especially if the progress of other vehicles is hindered. In addition, it should be remembered that you cannot overtake on the right.
And it is that, precisely, by the lane more to the right
cars are not allowed to pass move slower to our left. Doing so is considered a serious infraction according to article 82, chapter VII, of the General Traffic Regulations, the penalty for which is 200 euros, as well as the fact that it can cause traffic jams and accidents.
Thus, to overtake a slower car driving in the center lane, you have to change to the adjacent left lane. Then we will finish the maneuver by returning to the right lane. Remember that
you cannot circulate while remaining stationary in the left lane to overtake.
