The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was in kyiv to meet with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky. A meeting that served to give more clarity about Ukraine’s aspiration to be part of the European Union. How feasible is this incorporation? We analyze this and other points related to the war in Ukraine in our program.
Urusula von der Leyen’s visit was reinforced by the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, who also visited Bucharest and Chisinau to show support for Romania and Moldova, countries that have received thousands of refugees.
This week the support of 1,000 million dollars by the United States to Ukraine was also highlighted, a contribution that is added to the other 40,000 million dollars donated last May.
Meanwhile, on the ground, intense fighting and shelling continues in the city of Severodonesk and neighboring Lisychansk, where there have been complications for the evacuation of civilians. Both Russians and Ukrainians have been accused of hindering the departure of the few remaining citizens.
From Russia, the Gazprom company announced a reduction in gas shipments to Europe. While Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with the BBC, denied that Russia had invaded Ukraine and accused the West of broadcasting fake news. He further said that the “special military operation” was necessary as there was no other way for the West to understand that bringing Ukraine into NATO was a criminal action, in his words.
To analyze the recent events that occurred in the context of the war in Ukraine, we talked with our guests:
– Ruth Ferrero, professor of Political Science and European Studies at the Complutense University of Madrid and researcher attached to the Institute of International Studies.
