There is controversy in Uruguay after the capture of Alejandro Astesiano, head of custody of the Uruguayan president, for an apparent fraud with passports. Astesiano was arrested on September 25 accused of directing a criminal network that provided false birth certificates that stated that Russian citizens had Uruguayan parents, which allowed them to access the citizenship of the Eastern Republic. Uruguay, the example country of transparency in the region, fell into the clutches of corruption?
According to the Uruguayan Prosecutor’s Office, Alejandro Astesiano met with his conspirators in the Executive Tower. The investigation indicates about 20 cases of Russian citizens with passports obtained in this way. President Luis Lacalle Pou denied any knowledge of the case.
