Oksana Stanevich, an infectious disease specialist at the Pavlov First St. Petersburg Medical University, said in an interview with Lente.ru that the fourth wave of coronavirus in Russia may occur until November 2021.
“Considering the rate of spread of infection, seasonality, the fourth wave can be predicted by the beginning of November. I think we will approach it with a “tail” of 20-30 percent of those who are not vaccinated or sick, “the expert suggested.
In addition, Stanevich believes that insufficient vaccination rates may affect a possible autumn increase in the incidence of COVID-19. In her opinion, Russians have “confusion in their heads” on this issue, and in small settlements there are problems with the availability of vaccines.
“Putting all these factors together, I think we will not have time to achieve collective immunity by the fall,” concluded the infectious disease specialist.
Earlier, immunologist, Ph.D. Nikolay Kryuchkov said that herd immunity to COVID-19 will help bring the coronavirus pandemic to an end. He explained that the immune layer in society directly affects the death rate from the disease – the more people with immunity, the more noticeably the death rate decreases.
