In her debut as director and screenwriter, the actress Maggie Gyllenhaal won the Spirit Awards Known as the ‘Indie Oscars’. Based on the homonymous novel, “The Dark Daughter” was produced by Netflix and awarded at the last Venice Film Festival. Although it is not nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, critics suggest that Gyllenhaal would be the next woman to win the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay.
“More than anything I believe in love… I don’t want to establish rules, but I think that expressing love is one of its most beautiful manifestations”, he said in his speech.

Gyllenhaal arrived at the awards season with a film with which he “rebels” against prejudice. “The Dark Daughter” would give Olivia Colman the second Oscar for best actress and Jessie Buckley is also nominated for supporting cast.
“Those movies reminded me of how it feels when someone is true to themselves, when they listen to themselves,” said Stephen Gyllenhaal’s daughter and an actress who denounced sexism in Hollywood.

“I love the indie movies. I grew up making independent films. Everybody here in this tent has scrambled to make their movies. When we didn’t have enough money or we didn’t have enough time… we had a mantra.”
