The details that are becoming known about the derailment of a train last Saturday in the tunnel that connects the Atocha and Chamartín stations, an accident that triggered a railway chaos that lasted practically the entire weekend (15,000 passengers affected), suggest that one of the security mechanisms failed fatally.
Once the convoy separated from the unit that was towing it, it rushed along the slope of that section of the tunnel, with the consequent danger of appearing at the Atocha station. Minister Óscar Puente recognized it today, that the convoy “He began a journey in a kind of free fall through the Chamartín tunnel” and a serious accident did not occur because an employee forced the derailment.
In light of all this, and due to the shadow of doubt about the work of railway employees that the accident could cause, the Independent Trade Union Center and Civil Servants (CSIF), which is the most representative union in public administrations, has issued a statement in which he says he hopes “that the investigation clarifies the accident” and “asks for respect from the professionals of the Renfe public service.”
Furthermore, and remembering that more entities intervene in the railway network, including private companies, the union has asked for explanations about the participation of the French private company Alstom in the towing process that was taking place in that tunnel between Chamartín and Atocha.
Specifically, CSIF has asked Renfe to clarify whether the train was correctly accompanied by that company’s maintenance workers and why the emergency braking was not activated.
«The investigation must clarify without a doubt the causes that produced the accident in complete detail.. The hooked train should not go alone. It is necessary to clarify whether he was correctly accompanied by the maintenance workers of the Alstom company and why the emergency braking was not activated, a situation that led to the train having to be derailed on purpose,” he explains.
