Murcian magistrates are the third parties that bear the most workload, according to the analysis of the Judiciary
The courts of the Region of Murcia managed, at the start of this year, to slightly alleviate their delays, but they continue to be among the slowest in the country. The average response times were reduced between January and March to an average of 7.6 months of waiting to obtain a response in the first instance, according to the latest data collected by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). The figure represents a decrease of 4.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.
However, they have not managed to recover the already alarming level of delay that they managed before the pandemic turned everything upside down and continue to be among the slowest in the country. Specifically, they are the second that take the longest to issue a first sentence, only surpassed by Castilla La Mancha, with an average of 8.1 months. The national average is 6.1 months.
Although the situation has improved markedly compared to last year, the courts, with their average wait of 7.6 months to issue a first resolution, are now even further behind than before the pandemic. In 2019 the average wait was around 6.7 months and in 2018 the times were somewhat better: 6.3.
issue overload
The analysis of the response times of the Murcian courts cannot be separated, however, from the low ratio of judges in the Region of Murcia and its high level of litigation. Between January and March the Murcian courts entered a whopping 54,740 cases. The figure represents 6.7% more than in the same period of the previous year and translates into more than 608 daily cases. The litigation rate – which marks the number of cases filed per thousand inhabitants – now reaches 35.7.
Murcian judges are, with this situation, the third in the country with the highest workload – up to 355.4 cases on average in the first quarter of the year. Only the Canary Islands (376) and Madrid (360) exceed these figures, according to data from the CGPJ.
