The Council of Arab Transport Ministers affirmed its support for the re-nomination of the United Arab Emirates for membership of the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organization “IMO” in category “B” for the period “2022-2023”.
This came at the conclusion of the 34th session of the Council of Arab Transport Ministers, which was held today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States headed by Jordan, with the participation of Arab transport ministers and their representatives and heads of delegations.
The participating state delegation was headed by H.E. Eng. Hassan Mohamed Juma Al-Mansoori, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, and included H.E. Sheikh Nasser Al Qasimi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Infrastructure and Transport Regulatory Sector, and Eng. Muhammad Fikri, Head of the Land Transport Policies Department.
The draft agenda for the session included a number of topics related to the Arab transport sector that were discussed by the Executive Office yesterday and the recommendations it made regarding these items and consideration for their adoption, including supporting the Palestinian economy, and the report of the first meeting of the technical committee supervising the implementation of the Arab agreement to regulate passenger transport on roads between countries. A proposal to establish a comprehensive Arab electronic platform for transport in order to contribute to facilitating the transfer of trade between Arab countries, in addition to updating the study of standardizing the specifications of dimensions and axial weights for trucks operating between Arab countries, submitted by the Arab Union for Land Transport.
The draft agenda also included discussing the final version of the sixth draft of the draft agreement regulating maritime transport of passengers and goods between Arab countries for consideration by the Council of Arab Transport Ministers, and a guiding study on a proposal to establish national maritime gatherings in Arab countries.
Ways of financing a comprehensive feasibility study for the project to establish an Arab mechanism and a database to support the shipbuilding and repair industry in the Arab countries were discussed, due to the expected economic returns for this industry, in addition to discussing recent trends in the applications of artificial intelligence “AI” in the transport and logistics sectors and their future in the region. Arab League, and the leading role of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in this field.
The Council discussed, under the item of any new work, an item entitled “Security of Navigation and Energy Supplies in the Arabian Gulf Region”.
The Council of Arab Transport Ministers also elected its executive office for the next two years “2022-2023”. The new formation included Egypt as a president, Saudi Arabia as a deputy, and the membership of Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Iraq, Jordan, and Yemen.
