The letter was sent before the attack to an alleged critic of the Unification Church and in it suggested ending the life of the former prime minister
The confessed author of the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Tetsuya Yamagami, had sent a letter shortly before the attack in which he warned of his intentions. The letter shows the strong resentment that the 41-year-old man has towards the Unification Church, which he accuses of having ruined his entire family after his mother made large donations, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Japan Times. ‘. Thus, this letter was previously sent to an alleged critic of the church and in it he suggested ending the life of the former prime minister for precisely having ties to said sect.
The police would have been aware of the existence of the document, which was sent from Okayama prefecture. The man who received the letter — which targeted Abe as an influential supporter — had criticized the Unification Church on a blog.
On Friday, Yamagami’s uncle said his mother had donated more than 700,000 euros to the Unification Church in her lifetime. These donations included 60 million yen (about 429,000 euros) from the inheritance of Yamagami’s father. In addition, the woman would have delivered to this church the money obtained after the sale of real estate and her family assets. She subsequently continued to donate small amounts until she ran out of money in 2002.
Abe died on July 8 after being shot twice while giving a rally in the city of Nara. Yamagami was arrested at the scene.
