Hundreds of doctors gathered yesterday at the doors of the Official College in support of Tomás Merina, the candidate to preside over the college institution who won the elections on December 17, and whose candidacy was annulled last Wednesday by the Commission. … of Resources when considering that it did not meet the necessary requirements, as the former president, Manuel Martínez-Sellés, had denounced. Precisely yesterday, the regional government referred to this matter for the first time, expressing its “respect” for the College’s decisions and its desire that “a new electoral process take place as soon as possible.”
The spokesman for the regional Executive expressed his “respect” for the decision of the Resources Commission to annul the proclamation of the candidacy of Tomás Merina for the College elections, which he won by 4,475 votes (46.9 percent of those cast). , compared to the 2,580 of the candidacy of doctor Esther Rubio (27.07 percent) and the 2,393 of doctor Manuel Martínez-Selles (a 25.11 percent).
“If the candidacy logically did not meet the established requirements to be able to run for these elections, then logically that electoral process will have to be repeated and we have nothing more to say,” he indicated. Next, he expressed the desire of the regional Executive that “a new electoral process takes place as soon as possible.”
In the last week, what seemed like a routine transfer of powers between an outgoing president, Martínez-Sellés, and an incoming one, Tomás Merina, who was supported by the Amyts union, very combative among doctors and the main promoter of the strike in Primary Care –has become a soap opera that has ended up in the hands of Justice.
On the one hand, the Resources Commission annulled Merina’s candidacy, agreeing with Martínez-Sellés, who denounced at the beginning of the process that this candidate did not meet the required requirements of seniority and being active in the profession. On the other hand, Merina filed an administrative dispute against this appeal and provided the documentation with which she accredited her candidacy before the College’s electoral board.
Subsequently, the College has annulled Merina’s inauguration and Martínez-Sellés has presented an appeal to invalidate the electoral results. Yesterday afternoon, Merina called a rally at the door of the School, coinciding with the day and time when the social event of her inauguration was going to be held. Those present illuminated the façade of the school headquarters with their cell phones: “Given the darkness of their movements in the shadows, let’s bring the light to the School.”
