New pitcher of cold water for the bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in the Pyrenees. The government of Aragon describes as “ridiculous” the new proposal that the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) sent to it yesterday, Friday, to get out of the political blockade in which the project has been mired for a month and a half and that prevents it from presenting a formal candidacy . The president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco, has already set May 20 as the maximum deadline to solve the situation, while the International Olympic Committee (IOC) warned EL PAÍS three days ago that the political discussions “reduce credibility” to the candidacy. Time is running out for the Olympic plan.
The COE raised the possibility of moving snowboarding from the slopes of Baqueira (Catalonia) to Cerler (Aragón) and relocating cross-country skiing from Candanchú to Formigal (Aragón) so that all the valleys of the Aragonese Pyrenees would have a representation in the technical plan , as the president of the Diputación General de Aragón (DGA), Javier Lambán, claims. In exchange, the COE proposed moving figure skating from Zaragoza to Barcelona. The distribution continues without convincing the Lambán government, which considers the new plan “ridiculous”, according to DGA sources. The Aragonese Executive considers it unfair that the alpine skiing events (La Cerdanya), ice hockey and figure skating (Barcelona) fall only in Catalonia, understanding that they are the events with the most media impact.
Political disagreements come from afar. The COE, the Generalitat and the central government met at the beginning of April to validate a technical agreement in a meeting that was not attended by representatives of Aragon as a protest against that distribution, which did not include the Formigal and Cerler tracks. Its inclusion is a vindication of Lambán, who considers that the COE’s plans do not respect the “equality” promised by the COE itself and the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. In any case, sources from all administrations assure that the Aragon technical team validated that first proposal, which the Aragonese government finally rejected. Jaca would host curling; Candanchú the biathlon; and Zaragoza, speed skating, on the Aragonese side. The Catalan Pyrenees, in addition, alpine skiing (Molina) and freestyle (Baqueira).
Blanco visited the Generalitat on Thursday to explore the predisposition of the Catalan government to the new proposal. Sources from the Catalan Executive assure that they received the plan, but “without entering into new evaluations”. “The Generalitat was satisfied with the first proposal and we do not want to enter into controversy with Aragon,” insists the same source.
