The Councilor for the Environment, Mariano Vicente, explained that it was the Huerta Arriba irrigators themselves who alerted the municipal officials two months ago
The governing board of the Molina de Segura City Council has approved a file on supposedly dangerous waste in the channel of the municipality’s main ditch and has decided to refer the proceedings to the Prosecutor’s Office and Seprona so that they can continue with the investigation.
The objective is to know the origin of the spill in order to be able to initiate the procedures of the sanctioning procedure against the material authors of the denounced facts.
The Councilor for the Environment, Mariano Vicente, explained that it was the Huerta Arriba irrigators themselves who alerted the municipal officials two months ago that “water with bad odors was arriving, with a very scandalous appearance due to its texture, and it generated uncertainty”.
After the samples taken, it has been verified that the discharges are of industrial origin, but are not toxic. However, “it cannot be tolerated.” The mayor of the Environment emphasizes that the matter is serious because “a mechanism has been used to violate, not only for what I do but for how I do it.”
And he warns that the file is taken to the Prosecutor’s Office “because the discharge was reaching an irrigation canal, absolutely prohibited, through a municipal stormwater collector.”
In this sense, the City Council has a responsibility because it must ensure that regulations are complied with so that discharges are carried out in a public sewer system, controlled and monitored by the Consistory, a task that is also carried out by the Regional Entity for Sanitation and Purification (Esamur).
The councilor admits that “it is difficult to know which company is responsible” because there is a large industrial zone in the area. What Vicente does indicate is that “there is a systematic structural problem, because there are many industries that generate waste and it is not always treated properly.” In his opinion, “there is a persistent problem of waste that exceeds the thresholds.” For three years, this type of illicit action has been prosecuted more, especially since a year and a half ago a systematic dumping plan was implemented to carry out greater control.
More files
All this has led to the opening of more sanctioning files and, at present, there are a dozen of them that are of special relevance. But they are still unresolved, because many are appealed, causing the resolution time to be delayed.
“Things are coming out from under the carpet,” warns the mayor of Podemos. Despite this, he trusts that Molina’s industry, “which has been at the forefront in many aspects, will also get its act together in this aspect and correct bad practices.”
In addition, this type of disciplinary proceedings are framed in a criminal sphere and can lead to large fines.
