This Thursday specimens appeared floating in the river as it passed through the central Manterola footbridge, as reported by Huermur
In the absence of the result of taking water samples, the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) blamed the lack of oxygen in the water on Friday for the death of fish in the Segura River, as it passes through the urban area of Murcia. The Association for the Conservation of the Heritage of the Huerta de Murcia (Huermur) denounced this Thursday that dead specimens appeared under the Manterola walkway and lamented the state of the river.
CHS sources stated that as soon as the river nursery became aware of the situation, water samples were taken, which were later sent to the laboratory for analysis. In addition, the guards walked both banks of the riverbed upstream from where the fish appeared to check if there had been any spillage.
Despite everything, the same sources highlighted that “in 90% of cases”, when this type of mortality occurs, the cause is lack of oxygen, as may have occurred after the heavy rains that fell on Tuesday. “In these cases, the bottom is removed, which causes the rise of sediments that cause turbidity and lack of oxygen in the water.” Even so, they stressed that they are awaiting the results of the analysis.
The Huermur association announced that it was going to file a complaint, both against the CHS and against the Ministry of the Environment and the Murcia City Council, due to the state of the river as it passes through the city. “It is outrageous”, due to the death of fish and the foam.
