The local Government Board of the Cartagena City Council, chaired by the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, approved the proposal made by the Department of Sports to
grant, for the first time, athletes of high municipal interest, through aids that will be convened by the competitive competition procedure.
The objective of these subsidies is that athletes can continue developing their sports work and promote, in its different disciplines, the name of the municipality of Cartagena. The total amount of the aid will be 30,000 euros from the budget of the Department of Sports, and a
maximum of 1,500 euros per athlete.
“The Cartagena City Council remembers, for the first time, its elite athletes, those who go to national or international competitions, such as the Olympic Games that are about to begin. They are athletes who usually receive support from federations and sponsors, but their careers involve great resignations and many expenses, and although our contribution is modest, it will surely be of great help to them, ”said the mayor, Noelia Arroyo.
“It is also a way of recognizing from your City Council the value they have and how proud we are of the development of their sports careers,” added the mayor, who recalled that two athletes and two coaches from Cartagena will attend the Tokyo Olympic Games, which They begin next Friday, July 23.
Specifically, they are the swimmer Alberto Martínez, as well as the sailing coach Diego Fructuoso, and the table tennis athlete, María Xiao Yao, from UCAM Table Tennis, as well as their coach Silvia Elderyi, for whom the mayor has had words of praise and recognition «for representing our city and our country in the most desired sporting event for anyone who dedicates his life to sport.

Maintenance and improvement of the athletics track
Also in sports matters, the Governing Board approved the collaboration agreement between the City Council and the Cartagena Athletics Club for which it is awarded a subsidy of 20,000 euros, with which the Club will assume the cost of small repairs, as well as the use, custody and proper conservation of the material and the maintenance and cleaning of the facilities.
The mayor explained that preparatory work is already being done for the
renovation works of the track tartan for an amount of 132,100 euros, which is expected to be completed this summer. This is the first phase of the comprehensive reform that is going to be carried out in this facility, in which reform actions have already been carried out in bathrooms and changing rooms, and which in a second phase later includes the construction of a high-rise grandstand. , with changing rooms and a semi-basement for facilities and equipment.
Also in sports matters, the Governing Board approved the agreement between the City Council and the Football Federation of the Region of Murcia for the organization of the
arbitration of the local League of Grassroots Football, which was reactivated after the pandemic and in which a total of 4,000 boys and girls participate in more than 200 teams and 43 registered clubs.
On the other hand, the Governing Board approved an agreement between the City Council and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, to allocate 2.12 million to the
primary care in social services and guarantee the basic benefits of the service for one year. The agreement, which is renewed every year, allows to sustain the work of about 90 public employees who “are dedicated both to guarantee the immediate care of people in a situation or at risk of social exclusion, as well as to carry out a permanent evaluation and advice to people in situations of social need “, as explained by the mayor and councilor of the social area, Noelia Arroyo.
In another vein, the Governing Board approved several collaboration agreements of the La Mar de Músicas Festival, the Cartagena Folk Festival and the Cartagena Jazz Festival with the Estrella de Levante company, which provides financial support to the important cultural work carried out by the different festivals Other agreements of the La Mar de Músicas Festival have also been approved with the company Talleres M. Gallego SL, Hidrogea, Lhicarsa and Repsol.
Also in cultural matters, the Governing Board approved a modification of the budget to continue developing the
Municipal theater circuit in neighborhoods and county councils, with a program of more than fifty performances, with which the City Council intends to support professional theater companies, highly affected by the Covid pandemic, in addition to bringing the performing arts to the outskirts of the municipality. The program has a budget of 100,000 euros.
Along these lines, there is also the ‘Itenerarte’ initiative that has been offering painting and sculpture exhibitions in municipal social venues for a few weeks, as well as performances in neighborhoods and county councils of music and choral bands.
