The Department of Sports prepared a detailed report which justifies the urgent need to intervene in this space that is used weekly by more than 1,000 users, between Sports Schools, colleges, clubs and individual athletes
The City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz will carry out in 2022 the comprehensive reform of the Francisco Fernández Torralba Sports Complex, thus responding to a claim from the more than a thousand Caravaqueños -among professional athletes and amateurs- who regularly make use of this municipal public facility .
To materialize this important investment, there will be a grant of about 500,000 euros, which has been approved by the Governing Council of the Region of Murcia, at the proposal of the Ministry of the Presidency, Tourism and Sports. In this way, the Autonomous Community meets the demand of the Caracas Council, based on the detailed report prepared by its Department of Sports in which the urgent need to intervene in this space that is used regularly by more than 1,000 users is justified.
“The improvement in sports facilities has been one of the great pending issues in recent years and the intervention in this space dedicated to the practice of football and athletics is an urgent need due to its lamentable state”, highlighted the mayor, José Francisco García, who has expressed his gratitude to the regional government for being able to face a “neighborhood demand from years ago; not only from professional athletes, but from many fans and neighbors for its important educational and recreational use.
José Francisco García has pointed out that «in a municipality with a large number of sports fans, with one of the most numerous sports schools in the Region of Murcia and with a quarry of outstanding athletes and fans, the state of these could not be tolerated facilities and that is why from the first moment it was a priority objective of this Government team ».
Among the actions planned by the Caravaca City Council, the total renovation of the soccer field grass and the tartan of the athletics track stands out. To do this, state-of-the-art materials will be used to make it a benchmark sports facility throughout the Region of Murcia. The reform works also include the creation of an open-air gym and an area for the athletic modality of shot put, as well as the installation of an irrigation system and the improvement of the old changing rooms.
The start of the project is scheduled for next summer, a period in which there is less use of this sports complex as the schools and competitions have ended.
The Francisco Fernández Torralba Sports Complex was built about 15 years ago and currently has serious structural deficiencies, which has a negative impact on sports practice. The space is used by more than 1,000 weekly users, among students of the Municipal Sports Schools, schools and various sports clubs in the town, as well as groups of fans who request it on a rental basis. In addition, on weekends it hosts an average of 250 players in federated soccer competitions.
A few months ago the Department of Sports prepared a technical report that included all the deficiencies that this municipal facility has suffered for several years and that, fundamentally, are related to the pavements of the athletics track and the artificial grass field. Other deficiencies are the malfunctioning of the irrigation system, the breakage of the protective nets or the lack of storage space for the material.
