Several Russian banks that fell under sanctions will be disconnected from the SWIFT interbank payment system, as the press service announced on Saturday, February 26 Cabinet of Germany following negotiations between Western leaders.
The release following the talks said that the United States, France, Canada, Italy, Great Britain, the European Commission and Germany today (Saturday) evening decided on further tough financial sanctions against Russia.
“Thus, all Russian banks that have already fallen under the sanctions of the international community and, if necessary, other Russian banks will be excluded from the SWIFT system of international payment services. These institutions must be cut off from international financial flows so that their global activities are significantly limited,” the statement said.
The meeting of Western leaders was devoted to discussing restrictions for Russia in connection with a special operation to protect the population of Donbass. Earlier, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the need to impose much tougher economic sanctions against Russia, including a ban on Russian financial institutions from using SWIFT, said “Newspaper.ru“.
On February 24, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, reported that the decision to include Russia’s disconnection from SWIFT in the new anti-Russian package of sanctions would be made by the leaders of the EU countries. At the same time, US President Joe Biden said that Europe does not want to disconnect the Russian Federation from SWIFT now, since American sanctions are comparable in scale to this action.
According to CNN, the countries of the European Union did not differ in solidarity in their opinions on the issue of Russia’s disconnection from the SWIFT interbank system. Poland, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania have spoken out in favor of such measures being included in European sanctions, but Germany, Italy, Hungary and Cyprus disagree due to closer economic ties with Russia.
