The extreme European right rides on the wave that Donald Trump has launched from the United States. He believes that he can propel her towards victory and give her the final impulse she needs in a continent in which she has already gone far. The two ultra -right -wing groups in the European Parliament total 162 seats (conservatives have 188 and social democrats with 136). They are out of the commission that presides over Ursula von der Leyen, but they aspire to be more influentially forcing the right to assume their speech against immigration.
His problem is that they now put their hopes in Trump, whose interest in Europe is scarce. The EU knows that it is a matter of time that suffers the same treatment they are receiving Canada and Mexico.
Madrid was on Saturday the great conclave of a part of that reactionary Europe, which Viktor Orbán directs and in which other leaders such as Marine Le Pen, Santiago Abascal or Geert Wilders are included. It is the group that in Brussels calls the patriots with 84 seats that place them as the third force of the Eurocamara. Trump’s victory allows them to boast that they are “the future.”
It was Abascal who dared to mention the issue they prefer not to speak. What will happen when the US president imposes reprisals in commercial policy that will harm the European economy and specifically social sectors that support these parties in several countries.
It cannot be said that the preventive response of the VOX leader will be very effective. It is true that it is part of the usual argument of the extreme right. Look the other way and ask what is the other. Given the possibility that it is sure that the US applies tariffs to certain European exports, Abascal blamed other things: “The great tariff is the green pact and confiscatory taxes.” You may need a better argument to Spanish and French farmers who vote for their party and Le Pen. The star of the encounter was Orbán, the great dominator of Hungarian politics since 2010. He talked to the authority that gives him practically unbeatable in his country and being a thorn nailed on the side of Brussels. He presumed that his country is “the laboratory” of the European right. Orbán cited the myth of Europe kidnapped by a bull, which was actually Zeus, to say that Abascal is “the bravest bullfighter I’ve seen in politics.” That is what they want to do – sample to Europe – and the rest of the continent is notified.
