British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government faces a vote of no confidence on Monday, amid renewed calls from the opposition for him to step down immediately and hand the reins to an interim prime minister.
Johnson has officially resigned, but for now intends to stay in office until a new Conservative leader is elected.
The British news agency BA Media indicated that if the government were defeated today, it would launch the process of holding a general election, although this would require a large number of Conservative MPs to vote against it, or at least abstain.
Johnson had been expected to launch the debate – though it is now unclear whether he would do so or leave it to another minister. Unusually, a vote of no-confidence will take place based on a proposal submitted by the government.
The Labor Party had announced that it would seek a vote of no-confidence after Johnson announced that he would remain in office until the fall, when a new Conservative leader is chosen.
The government rejected the wording of the motion of no-confidence by the Labor Party, as the party expressed mistrust in the government and in Johnson, which prompted Tory MPs to announce that they still trusted the Prime Minister, if they wanted to avoid a new election.
Therefore, the ministers themselves submitted a motion of no confidence in the government after the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Nigel Evans, advised the two parties to resolve the problem themselves.
