A month ago the movie was finally released Borderlandsa film that adapts the events of the shooter-style video game series with a particular kind of humor, which is why many fans had in mind that it would make sense to bring it to the big screen. However, it seems that things were not done quite right and that was reflected in the box office, being a disaster to the point that a few weeks after its release it was also released on streaming to try to recover some of the investment in the production.
The film has turned out to be a bigger flop than expected, barely covering its advertising costs. Although a modest reception was anticipated from its August 9 release, the final numbers exceeded negative expectations. With a production budget of $115 million and an additional $30 million in marketing, the film grossed only $8.6 million in its opening weekend, reaching a worldwide total of $30.9 million.
Compared to other adaptations, the performance of Borderlands at the box office has been poor. While recent hits like Super Mario Bros. raised over $1.3 billion worldwide, and Uncharted grossed $401 million, not even coming close to covering its initial budget, making it one of the biggest disappointments in video game adaptations.
Critics have also been equally harsh on the film. Rotten Tomatoesreceived a rating of only 10% approval among critics, who considered it a failure in terms of cinematic quality. This low score reinforces its failure both at the box office and in critical reception, leaving little room for redemption.
Despite these discouraging numbers, some fans find some solace in the fact that at least the film hasn’t been labeled the worst video game adaptation. Compared to Uwe Boll’s notorious productions, it has managed to rise above those negative standards. For now, it’s already available for purchase on digital platforms.
