The champion Atlético Bucaramanga eliminated Millonarios from the BetPlay Cup, defeating them 4-2 in shots from the penalty spot in the round of 16, after a 1-1 in the 90 minutes that could have been thrashed for the local team at the beginning and that was marked by a controversial arbitration.
According to the criteria of
In a year in which they have had many bad games, Millonarios played the worst first half in a long time. It was, in those 45 minutes, a team that lacked spirit, with very poor individual levels.
Bucaramanga, in turn, showed offensive football that it does not offer very often. They overwhelmed Millonarios and if they did not go to half-time with a victory in their favor it was thanks to goalkeeper Diego Novoa, who stopped four goal balls, and the post, which prevented one more goal after the first, achieved by the Venezuelan Andrés Ponce, to 26 minutes, after a great team play and a beautiful cue clearance by Fabián Sambueza.
Millonarios went to half-time without precedent, although there were two penalty actions that referee Nolberto Ararat did not sanction: one, a foul by Cristian Zapata, who for trying to reject kicked Santiago Giordana in the arm, and a handball by Santiago Jiménez when he swept to recover a ball.
Very upset by what he saw in the first half, coach Alberto Gamero made three entrance changes for the second. Daniel Ruiz, Juan José Ramírez and Leonardo Castro entered, and Félix Charrupí and John Córdoba left, with a very poor performance, and Giordana.
Millos balanced the match and achieved the tie very quickly, taking a corner kick from Ramírez that found Sergio Mosquera free to finish. And Gamero’s men could have finished the series in the last 45, but they lacked the skill to finish. And, in addition, there was another penalty, much bigger than the previous ones, when in a jump, Fredy Hinestroza hit Leonardo Castro in the back of the head with his elbow.
In the penalties, Jorge Arias kicked the first very badly for Millos, but then Novoa brought his team back to life by saving the second, taken by Fredy Hinestroza. Everything remained the same until the fourth blue charge, when Aldaír Quintana brilliantly stopped Ramírez’s charge. And then, Sambueza sealed the classification of the League champion, who wants a double.
