The best right now|In the Midsummer Eve series by the Norwegian director known for his delicious Christmas series, the characters hide their secrets behind their sunny smiles.
At the beginning of everything seems perfect.
There is a wonderful yellow house by the sparkling sea, birches dancing in the wind, sunshine, boaters speeding by and a happy-looking family in the yard.
However, the music reveals that not everything is as it seems. The series starts with a snippet by Antonio Vivaldi The four Seasons -from the violin concerto, the fourth of the concerto, Winter-from the first, fatally sounding part of the part Allegro non molto.
Norwegian series Midsummer night looks quite like Strömsö, but under the surface every character in the series has something going on.
Betrayals, lies, life changes, twisted relationships and big secrets. One of them turns out to be Jannike, an overzealous hustler and meddling in other people’s affairs (Linn Skåber) as a result of sniffing.
The five-part miniseries takes place during one summer afternoon. With the help of flashbacks used as a means of narration, the temporal timeline sometimes jumps far into the past. The stories of the characters unravel little by little.
With the series has a clear starting point: Carina (Pernilla August) gathers his family together for a traditional Swedish midsummer celebration with the intention of telling the family the big news. Carina’s husband Johannes (Dennis Storhøi) hesitates, but agrees to the arrangement.
Attempts to tell are watered down time and time again and eventually the progress of the case becomes painful to follow.
Flower wreaths, strawberry cake and Helan gärin in between, the viewer finds out what happened four weeks ago.
Series is very similar in style to the recent productions of its creator and director. Norwegian director by Per-Olav Sørensen previous works include, among other things, perfectly delicious Christmas series Home for Christmas (2019–2020) and Christmas storm (2022).
Sørensen has a unique ability to reach something deeply human in his series. It also manages to be warm-hearted, profound and touching Midsummer night.
It’s the series’ certain kind of mundaneness and sense of authenticity that delights me, even though there’s plenty of drama involved. Sørensen once again succeeds in telling a juicy, bitter freshness relatable story that leaves you thirsting for a sequel.
