It is the new high-tech tank: The French weapons manufacturer Nexter is showing the Enhanced Main Battle Tank. Technology from the German Leopard 2 is also included.
Cairo – The French defense company Nexter, partner of the Munich tank builder KMW, presented a new super battle tank at the Egypt Defense Exposition (EDEX) in Cairo. It is intended to combine the best military features of the French Leclerc and the German Leopard 2.
In 2015, the Bavarian company KMW and the French state-owned Nexter Systems merged to form KMW+Nexter Defense Systems (KNDS) for the MGCS project. Engineers from both sides did not agree on many points about the planned German-French Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), and there was a particular dispute over the main weapon. That is why the ambitious arms project between Germany and France is currently in danger of failing.
Nexter is now exhibiting the so-called Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT) in Egypt. The French arms manufacturer wants to strengthen the tank capacities of the Egyptian armed forces, writes KNDS in a press release.
According to the magazine, the state-of-the-art tank features: European Security & Technology about the latest technologies and, above all, a distance active protection system (APS) against anti-tank guided weapons. These systems are intended to destroy high-performance bullets and grenades from reactive anti-tank rifles before they impact a vehicle. The importance of developing effective APS has recently increased enormously due to the war in Ukraine.
EMBT from Nexter: Tank combines features of the Leclerc and the Leopard 2
In the military conflict, the Ukrainian troops are attacking Kremlin autocrat Vladimir Putin’s invading army with the Javelin anti-tank guided missile, while both sides are also relying on the old but feared RPG-7 anti-tank rifle. From videos and photos, it looks like a hardkill system is installed on the EMBT tower. In this case, incoming projectiles are located by sensors and counteracted within milliseconds.
This happens either, like with a shotgun, through shrapnel fired at lightning speed, a load with many projectiles or through a pressure wave. Such a hardkill system is not installed as standard in either the French Leclerc or the German Leopard 2, and certainly not in the Leopard 1 tanks that Germany is currently supplying to Ukraine for its defense.
EMBT: New main battle tank has integrated MTU diesel engine from the Leopard 2
What is striking is the very flat and smoothed bow, which is also intended to protect the four-man crew from the impact of anti-tank grenades. The ARX weapon station in 30 millimeter caliber is just as powerful as the 120 mm smoothbore cannon, which is also installed in the latest versions of the Leclerc with the 22-shot autoloader. In addition to the powerful machine cannon with a range of 1,500 meters, the ARX 30 includes a NATO standard 7.62×51 machine gun.
According to the magazine European Security & Technology Several sensors for vehicle steering ensure a noticeable number of corners and edges on the EMBT tower. An integrated feature of the “Leo” is the narrow tub that rises at the rear. The 61.5 tonne and 10.45 meter long tank has a maximum range of 460 kilometers and can travel on the road at speeds of up to 65 km/h, which meets current NATO battle tank standards. As with the Leopard 2, a German MTU diesel engine with a maximum output of 1500 hp is installed. (pm)
