In recent years, a sporting rivalry has arisen between Tigers and Cougars. Both feline squads will meet again in the semifinals of the Apertura 2023 tournament of the Liga MX. On the occasion of this confrontation, we remember the most outstanding players who have worn the jerseys of the two clubs.
The Paraguayan forward arrived at Pumas in mid-2018 and immediately made an impact with the UNAM team. Thanks to his great performance, he attracted the interest of Tigres, who in January 2021 acquired his services. ‘Cocoliso’ was not the same in New Aeon and he left the team a year and a half later.
The Argentine striker won the affection of Pumas based on his great performances since his arrival in January 2014. Two and a half years later, Tigres ‘stole’ the figure from the UNAM team. Sosa’s career was never the same.
Juan Pablo Vigón is one of the most recent ‘thefts’ from Tigres to Pumas. The midfielder became an immovable member of the National University since his arrival in mid-2019. After two years, he signed with Tigres, where he rotates the title with the substitute.
Tigres bought Luis Quiñones’ card at the end of 2015, but decided to immediately loan him to Pumas. With the UNAM team, the Colombian winger showed signs of his great talent. Quiñones returned to the UANL half a year later. Later he was loaned to Lobos BUAP and Toluca. In December 2018 he returned to the royal team to become historic.
‘Tito’ Villa is a Cruz Azul legend, but neither in Pumas nor in Tigres could he shine. He arrived at the UNAM team in mid-2012 and just one tournament later he left the institution to sign with the royals. Villa spent two years there, but could not match what was done in the Machine.
The current technical director of the Mexican National Team emerged from the basic forces of Pumas and was part of the team that won the Bicampeonato in 2004. In 2005, as seems to be a tradition, he signed with Tigres, a squad with which he spent a couple of years.
This is another case of a Pumas youth player who signed for Tigres. David Toledo played with UNAM between 2004 and 2007, when he signed with Atlante. The midfielder signed with Tigres in mid-2009 and was with this squad until the beginning of 2013.
Sancho emerged from the basic forces of Pumas and spent his entire career in these two teams. He signed with Tigres in 2000 and returned to Pumas in 2006. In 2007 he returned to the UANL team, with which he retired in 2011.
Although he only spent two and a half years in Pumas, ‘Kikín’ left an indelible mark on Pumas and won the two-time championship with this squad. In January 2005 he signed with Cruz Azul, a year and a half later he went to Benfica. After a terrible time in Europe, Tigres brought him back in January 2007. He spent three years on the team, but his performance was nothing to brag about.
The ‘Emperador’ emerged from the Pumas youth academy and was in the first team from 1988 to 1996. In 2000, after having spent four years at Chivas, Suárez signed with Tigres, where he stayed until 2006.
To this list we must add other elements such as Evanivaldo Castro ‘Cabinho’, Jorge Santillana, Rogelio Rodríguez, Jesús Olalde, David Oteo, Joaquín del Olmo and Miguel Spain.
