Urkullu has called Sánchez to inquire about the situation of the journalist, who is isolated in a Polish prison accused of a crime of espionage for Russia of which he declares himself innocent
The Basque Government has called this Tuesday for a “fair and speedy” trial for the Basque journalist Pablo González, imprisoned in Poland after being arrested near the border with Ukraine, on charges of espionage for the Russian military intelligence services GRU . The Lehendakari himself, Iñigo Urkullu, has been in direct contact with the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, to inquire about the situation in which González finds himself, as confirmed by sources from the Basque Executive.
In an appearance after the meeting of the Governing Council, the Minister for Equality, Justice and Social Policies, Beatriz Artolazabal, reported that, since her arrest, the Basque Executive has been in contact with her family and with the central government, since that it is the State that is responsible for the work of consular assistance, which is already receiving journalists.
“I would like to adhere to what Reporters Without Borders has stated, which is to vindicate the profession of journalist and urge a fair and speedy trial with legal assistance in Poland for Pablo González,” he added.
As he pointed out, Acción Exterior of the Basque Government is working to carry out a “close follow-up” of the case of the detained informant. For his part, the spokesman for the Basque Executive, Bingen Zupiria, highlighted that last Wednesday the Lehendakari addressed the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to inquire about González’s situation.
First contact with the consul
The consulate was able to contact González yesterday for the first time since his arrest and they were able to transfer his wife Oihana Goiriena who is “in good spirits and in good health.” The journalist pleads not guilty to the charges against him and trusts that he will return home once the three-month provisional prison period allowed by Polish law is over.
