It was the first shopping center of Barcelona to open its doors in the nineties, currently occupies four thousand square meters and its architects were inspired by … the Rockefeller Center in New York.
This is the L’illa building, a shopping center located in full diagonal avenue, near Camp Nou And in which today you can find stores, restaurants and up to two hotels that usually host the expeditions of football and basketball clubs that have to face the Barca club.
Rafael Moneo and Solà-Morales, its architects
Its facade measures 334 meters long and there are areas that the height is around 60 meters. But one of the great curiosities of the construction of this shopping center is that the ingenious architects responsible for its construction, Rafael Moneo and Manuel de Solà-Morales, They forgot about Gaudí and looked at New York.
And, shaped like lying, L’Ella Diagonal is inspired by one of the great and emblematic New York buildings such as Rockefeller Center. In this case, the New York building has almost 800 thousand square meters built, occupying an area of almost 90 thousand square meters.
The works of the shopping center of the Catalan capital started in 1990 and ended in 1993, when it was inaugurated. As part of the complex one can also see two schools, a sports center, a parking lot for 2,400 vehicles and a mythical nightclub of the Barcelona night.
The unique style of L’illa Diagonal has always aroused a lot of interest among its visitors and architecture lovers. In fact, the building has obtained several awards awarded by different entities, including the FAD Awardwhich was granted in 1994.
By the way, the name of the Barcelona building, “Illa”, has nothing to do with the portion of land that, surrounded by water, is called island in Spanish. “Illa” refers to each of the numerous regular spaces that were created following the modernist Cerdà Plan of the city.
