The CHS explains that it is due to the opening of the collapsible gate installed at the height of the La Fica dam
The course of the Segura river, as it passes through the city of Murcia, did not look its best this Friday when it appeared loaded with mud. From the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) they explain that this transitory picture is due to the opening of the collapsible gate installed at the height of the La Fica dam.
This sort of giant clapper gate that is activated by underground hydraulic jacks -with waterproof protections so that they do not get damaged-, opens completely in the event of heavy rainfall, helping the sediment to be transported and, therefore, preventing it from accumulate in this part of the channel. Thus, in the long run, the need for dredging is avoided.
