The general secretary of the Italian Social Democrats will lead the formation until a congress is convened that gives way to “the new generations”
The general secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), former Prime Minister Enrico Letta, presented his resignation on Monday at the head of his formation after the poor results harvested in the elections held this Sunday in Italy. However, he will continue to pilot the formation for the next few weeks until a congress is convened to elect his replacement, to which he will not appear. “It’s time for the new generations,” he said at a press conference.
The PD received 19% of the ballots, compared to 26% for Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy, despite the fact that until a couple of weeks ago both parties were competing for first place.
Letta thus assumes responsibility for the electoral debacle, accentuated by the decision not to join forces with the 5-Star Movement to form a left-wing front. A strategy diametrically opposed to the one adopted by the right that, thanks to the union of Brothers of Italy with La Liga and Forza Italia, will enjoy an absolute majority in Congress. Italian electoral law favors coalitions.
“The voters have said their part and I hope that from now on we can work to build a better alternative than what has been done so far,” he said, while assuring that his party will make a “tough and uncompromising opposition”. » to the next right-wing government. “We are not going to allow Italy to leave the heart of Europe, where it belongs,” she said.
Letta has assured that if Meloni has achieved such good results it is also thanks to the attempts of the president of the 5-Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, to “take down” the still Prime Minister Mario Draghi, as well as for the “friendly fire of former allies”, in reference to Action leader Carlo Calenda.
