The appointment with the next Formula 1 world championship will definitively concretize the numerous technical-regulatory changes foreseen by the FIA starting from 2022: the Bahrain GP, the first act of the world championship, will allow spectators to take a closer look at the aerodynamic solutions introduced by the teams, which will substantially change the appearance of the cars compared to those of 2021 . Moreover, apart from this significant ‘retouch’, there will also be another important change that will affect the aesthetics of the car, this time attributable to the tires. They will, in fact, pass from 13 inches used until last season to 18, with a considerable increase in the rubber diameter. What will not change will instead be the sole tire supplier, once again attributable to Pirelli.
The Milanese manufacturer, moreover, had already implemented this revolution starting from 2020, but carrying it out on the single-seaters of Formula 2. In two seasons with these new measures, the results highlighted by the cars have therefore prompted Pirelli to adopt this solution also in Formula 1. In this way, the cadet category of the Circus has contributed to collect useful data to carry out this step, as confirmed by the Pirelli F1 Manager Mario Isola: “It was a very useful experience – commented – because we had the opportunity to test the 18-inch tires in a real racing environment with Formula 2. It is certainly a different car, much less powerful, and the stress it puts on the tires is different. However, we had the opportunity to see the behavior of the tire in traffic, on curbs, and even in some situations where, during the tire test, you don’t get a real picture. So, we took this data and compared it with the old 13-inch tire we used in Formula 2 to understand all the real differences, and I think in the end it was quite useful ”.
