In the presence and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the “Arabic Language Summit” was launched yesterday, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Youth, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language of the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi. Under the slogan “Dialogue of Societies and Communication of Civilizations”, over two days, in conjunction with the 22nd session of the Conference of Ministers Responsible for Cultural Affairs in the Arab World, at “Expo 2020 Dubai”. The summit represents a platform for interaction and dialogue that brings together decision-makers, stakeholders and the public.
The summit comes within the framework of the celebration of the International Day of the Arabic Language on December 18 of each year, and the Arabic language is one of the most widespread languages in the world, spoken by about 420 million people. Drawing the features of its present and future, as it constitutes an international reference for the Arabic language and charting the future of Arabic. The summit will discuss issues of the Arabic language in its various fields and topics in order to enrich dialogue and provide distinguished experiences, in addition to discussing the most important recommendations of the report “The State of the Arabic Language and Its Future” issued by the Ministry of Culture and Youth in December 2020.
“Eternal Language”
During the opening, a video clip of the opening of the Arabic Language Summit was shown, followed by Kazem El Saher singing the poem “The Eternal Language” by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the Arab World Institute in Paris was chosen as the personality of the summit, where he honored His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Media Council, Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, Mujeeb Al-Zahrani, Director General of the Arab World Institute in Paris, on behalf of Jack Lang, President of the Arab World Institute in Paris, and the history of the exhibition was reviewed over the course of 34 years of its establishment.

The first session of the summit was held under the title “Language and Culture” and Future Paths, where it shed light on the reality of the Arabic language and culture in a changing world in which digital transformation is accelerating and the challenges facing our language and culture are growing. The session also discussed the most important efforts and steps that must be taken in order to design a new future for the language. The Arabic language and the mechanisms of cooperation between the responsible authorities in different countries to chart the paths for the future of the Arabic language. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, and Dr. Ali bin Tamim, President of the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, spoke with him. The second session was held under the title “National Policies for the Arabic Language” to highlight the need to renew Arabic language legislation, and extrapolation of the impact of applicable legislation, its results and its best Arab practices, in an effort to develop legislative structures and legal texts to include all areas of language uses and applications in keeping pace with developments in technology and digital transformation. Salem bin Muhammad Al Malik, Director General of the Islamic World Organization for Development, Science and Culture (ISESCO) spoke in it. Ibrahim bin Muhammad Abanmi, advisor to the King Salman International Complex for the Arabic Language, and Kamel Al-Abd Al-Jalil, Secretary-General The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters in Kuwait, and Dr. Ali bin Tamim, President of the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language.
Memoranda of Understanding
On the sidelines of the Arabic Language Summit, which will be held on December 19 and 20, several memoranda of understanding were signed between local and Arab institutions yesterday. A memorandum of understanding between the Arab Thought Foundation and the Ministry of Culture and Youth was signed by Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth, President of Zayed University, and Prince Khaled. Bin Bandar Al-Faisal, Chairman of the Council of the Arab Thought Foundation, a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry and Al-Wasl University, a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center, and a memorandum between Zayed University and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center.

The Arabic Language Summit hosts the Spanish Professor Paula Santín Grimm to talk about the affairs of the Arabic language in the countries of non-native speakers in a serious academic pursuit of the strengths that give her opportunities to delve into the study of Arabic literature and language arts, in addition to talking about the role of translation in the communication of civilizations, and based on the results that came out It contains a report on the status and future of the Arabic language and the new approaches that have been monitored for the development of Arabic language curricula in Arab countries.
