A few days ago, Adelante Andalucía invited members of Bildu, ERC, the CUP and the BNG. Those of the party andalusian of Teresa Rodriguezwhich has two regional deputies and included in its general program the breakup of Spain for its subsequent union in a confederation of “Iberian States”, wanted to surround themselves with political personalities such as Oskar Matute or Gabriel Rufián to discuss various topics, among which the territorial one stands out.
According to the chronicles, few things were out of the ordinary: many flags with stars, solemn references to the different and ancient ethnic peoples attending, proclamations against the unity of the State – finished off with a tweet from Ruffian where there was no shortage of “Long live Andalucía free!”—, a lot of raised fists and affectionate words of camaraderie. However, the question of economic agreements, quotas, agreements and other names given to regional privileges, authentic living remains of the Old Regime, did not stop hovering.
Unless one is fooled by the false brotherhood of the people that usually accompanies the separatist discourse, you will be able to perceive what happened there: politicians from two of the most developed regions—thanks to the historic industrialization promoted from Madrid to the detriment of other areas of the country—went to a less developed region to legitimize not leaving a single cent the Basque and Catalan tribes towards the others, nor towards the one who acted as hostess. Because that is what they did there, promote the rupture of that which unites them all: Spain.
Hating what makes them politically equal, they claimed privilege and division with words of brotherhood
Strange thing, the camaraderie that division advocates. At no time was anyone heard to say “we don’t want to redistribute or vote with you,” and yet that was the main issue. The strange thing is not that Matute or Rufián seek that each suit tribal hold its candle – all this disguised as brotherhood between the supposed peoples – but that politicians from less developed regions who benefit from the territorial redistribution between income and assets come to this farce, as zealous converted believers. The amazing thing is that these are the ones act as servile hosts in the presence of Rufián, who supports a “free Andalusia”—that is, separated—as a means to fragment Spain and thus put an end to the journey that money makes from his own pocket to the west and south.
Hating what makes them politically equal, they claimed privilege and division with words of brotherhood. The search for the breakup of the Spanish political nation, and therefore of its working class, was celebrated with enthusiasm by those who would be the main victims if it were to occur. Everyone present was very special, but in the end there are always some more special than others. I can’t help but imagine, in grotesque fashion, a representative of each separatist party on that Marinaleda stage, receiving great applause while they clasp their hands up high shouting: “Let’s all finish together, once and for all, with everything that unites us!”
