Year 1870. Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a young attorney, a member of high society in New York. The gentleman, always loyal to the rules of the environment in which he lives, is engaged to the beautiful aristocrat May Welland (Winona Ryder), with whom he plans to get married. Archer’s life seems like a perfect life, but everything changes with the arrival in town of May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), a charming woman who lives outside social conventions, escaped from a disastrous marriage with a Polish count. Due to her escape from her husband, Ellen is seen with the evil eye and banned, but thanks to the intervention of Archer, the woman is readmitted in the salons of New York high society.
