The ACOR sugar factory in Olmedo today began grinding the first beets of the planned 1,300,000 tons coming from 12,154 hectares, 20% more than last season.
The plucking began on September 30 and on October 11, beets began to be delivered from all the provinces of Castilla y León. The rains that fell during these 10 days, more than 100 liters per square meter in various parts of the Community, have forced work on lighter plots. In each area, from the Agronomic Service, the planning of the uprootings has been carried out taking into account the relevant information of each plot, such as polarization, the texture of the land and the sowing date, since The beet plantings of this campaign were carried out in a staggered manner between the months of March, April and May due to the weather. This fact conditions the planning of rooting, since this crop needs a cycle of 180-220 days. The average discount of the 1,200 hectares uprooted has been 6%.
Optimistic with “wealth”
The first 30,000 tons of beets that are already at Point 0 of the Olmedo facilities have an average polarization of 16.5 degrees, which means one degree more than the average of last season. “We have to be cautious, but at the same time we are optimistic with these first data and we hope that the polarization and weight data improve those of the 2023-24 campaign,” says the president of ACOR, Jesús Posadas. We must also highlight the rains and mild temperatures in September, which have benefited the development of the crop and the possibility of improvement. This campaign, the applications of insecticides with authorized active materials were carried out at the optimal time in general terms and this dynamic of control over the crop has meant that the symptoms of viral yellowness are less than the last campaign. It is also worth noting that the incidence of cercospora, the most aggressive foliar disease currently affecting the crop, has been lower than the previous year.
Beet cultivation continues to boom. Of the 12,150 hectares contracted, Valladolid with almost 3,800 hectares is the province with the largest area, followed by León with 1,600 hectares, with an increase of 60% compared to the previous campaign. Burgos with 1,470, Ávila with 1,288 and Palencia with 1,050 are the provinces with a significant crop area. Also worth highlighting are the more than 525 hectares from Álava, almost 100 more than the 23-24 campaign.
The cooperative began hiring for the 2024-25 campaign with a minimum guaranteed income of 61 euros per ton for contracted deliveries. A profitable price since production costs for partners have decreased compared to other years.
