Disney Plus recently released a new trailer for Star Wars The Acolyte The Follower. However, the video in question has given rise to some discussions online due to an element present in it: the laser whip.
Some have said that it doesn’t make any sense and that it’s yet another invention that ruins Star Wars. The problem is that this is not something created for The Acolyte The followeras the laser whip has existed within the Star Wars imagery for decades.
Obviously not all criticisms are incorrect. For some users the idea didn’t work some time ago and it doesn’t work now, but obviously in this case there is greater knowledge of the facts on the issue. If you criticize the creation in and of itself and not (mistakenly) the fact that it is yet another invention of the new direction of Star Wars, then there is nothing wrong.
Details about the Star Wars laser whip
The lightwhip is a modified lightsaber with one or more plasma blades in flexible containment shields. Used by the Jedi Order during the Sith Wars, the whip has also been associated with the Nightsisters of Dathomir. One character known for using this weapon is High Republic-era Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh, played by Rebecca Henderson in The Acolyte Follower. The character’s first official appearance was in The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, released in 2021.
Laser whips were first canonically mentioned in Fantasy Flight Games’ 2016 book Endless Vigil, later appearing in 2021’s The High Republic: A Test of Courage. However, the lightwhip originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity and is first appeared in the comic Star Wars (1977) #95 in 1985.
