Impossible challenges made possible
The impossible is only a goal still to be achieved, 85% of Italians think so, especially when it comes to medicine. what emerges from the Creating possible research, carried out by AstraRicerche on a representative sample of the population. Among the impossible challenges made possible: organ transplantation (51.8%), mass vaccination of the 1950s (51.1%) and antibiotics (48.1%). The discoveries that took place in the 21st century follow in 4th and 5th place: the mapping of DNA (37.1%) and the drug to prevent the spread of HIV (28.6%). Among the goals that today seem unattainable and that Italians believe can be achieved there are: the cure for all cancers, even those that today are orphans of therapies, for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and the availability of personalized therapies based on characteristics individual. Goals achievable thanks to scientific research, which in fact for about 90% of Italians is a determining factor for the state of health and well-being. Awards, such as those sponsored by Gilead, have significance to the scientific community and our young people beyond the merit of the award itself. Scientific research has received limited attention and researchers have often felt that they are “children of a lesser god”. The awards convey the message of a social appreciation of high quality research and its role for the present and future of Medicine commented Alberto Mantovani, Scientific Director of Humanitas Clinical Institute, Professor Emeritus Humanitas University, who spoke during the Ceremony with an Open Lecture on the topic of impossible challenges in medicine. For Gilead it is a privilege to collaborate with those who put themselves at the service of science and at the service of assistance, making possible remarkable goals with projects that have become reality – underlined Valentino Confalone, CEO of Gilead Science Italy – and that have an important impact on research and on the lives of people with serious illnesses. Over the years we have tried to expand and always introduce new elements. And precisely because we come from a difficult period and in line with the PNRR, we are committed to helping to defeat violence against women. We have decided to support the anti-violence network of the municipality of Milan, to support women victims of violence and their minor children involved.
