After seeing penalty shoot-outs like the one between Chelsea-Liverpool in the Carabao Cup or the final of the Uefa Europa League between Villarreal and Manchester United, we have asked ourselves: Which are the longest in history? Here we leave them:
By all accounts it was a bland and boring match in the fifth round of the Danish Cup but it ended with an amazing penalty shootout. A whopping 40 pitches.
After reaching no more and no less than 40 pitches in the fifth round of the Coupe de France, the referee had to stop the shootout due to lack of light. In the end, the rules tipped the balance towards the lower category team.
In the Copa Argentina there was another batch in which there was a lot of success. 42 penalties were taken and only 1 was missed, which allowed General Paz Juniors to advance to the next round. Something exceptional.
Note for the curious… The highest number of penalty goals in history was scored in the 1988 Argentinos Juniors-Racing match. 39 of 44 penalties were scored. The Argentine Federation decided to try a new tournament system, which ended up being decided on penalties. Up to three times a player had to launch.
Nothing more and nothing less than 48 pitches, of which only 33 entered the goal. “When the last one failed, it was a relief,” the president of the Namibian Federation acknowledged when he learned of the record achieved.
