Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, the defending champion and world number one, reached the US Open, the last Grand Slam, by defeating China’s Yiping Wu, ranked 174th in the world, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
The 26-year-old Russian waited for a long time, before entering the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which witnessed a historic match, probably the last for American legend Serena Williams, who lost to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in three hours.
Medvedev, who won his first major title in New York last year, hit 12 aces and 26 winning balls, and lost his serve one “orphan” to settle the confrontation in one hour and 56 minutes.
He said after his victory: “I don’t see a lot of things to improve, maybe the double faults on serve, but that is if we are forced to check something, and if I continue like this, I have good chances of achieving something big.”
He will meet in the next round the Australian “naughty” Kyrgios, the 25th seed, who reached the fourth round for the first time.
Kyrgios, the Wimbledon runner-up this summer, overcame American Jay Jay Wolff, the 87th seed, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 55 minutes.
The Australian said: I am happy to reach this stage, regardless of winning or losing, I worked hard to reach the fourth round, I want to face the best tennis players in the world in the most beautiful stadiums and win abundant financial prizes. 3-1.
